Our services are complete, with our team understanding anything that could go wrong in an attic or crawl space and knowing how to make it right again. Here are some crucial details about the many services we offer.

Rodent Proofing

Rodents are a significantly underestimated problem in these spaces. If left alone, they can cause substantial damage to your attic and crawl space, eventually making their way into your home.

We can help by sealing off entry points, setting traps, and eliminating potential food sources. We’ll work with you to ensure the rodent-proofing plan sticks and guide you through ways you can mitigate the chances of unwanted critters making themselves at home in the future.

Mold Remediation

Mold is common in many attics and crawl spaces, especially those exposed to water or moisture. Mold can impact the air quality in your home and ruin insulation and other materials.Mold remediation involves multiple treatment approaches to get rid of mold for good. Our services include inspections to ensure we find the source of the issue and eliminate moisture sources to keep it from growing back. If you’re already dealing with mold growth, we have specialty chemicals and equipment to kill mold spores, including antimicrobial treatments to discourage the growth from worsening.

Vapor Barriers

Vapor barriers are similar to radiant barriers. Vapor barriers keep out moisture similarly to how radiant barriers keep out heat. Our team can install vapor barrier sheeting or plastic. These barriers are beneficial if you’re having issues with moisture damage and can even be a way to help mitigate mold growth.

Attic and Crawl Space Improvements

Many attics and crawl spaces are stuck in the past. If it’s time for an upgrade, we’re here to help. We can upgrade access doors, reinforce structures, and install ventilation systems to help bring your space into the current decade.

Insulation Removal and Replacement

Attics and crawl spaces are often home to insulation. But insulation often needs specialized attention from experts who know what they’re working with.Attic Projects offers new insulation installation and can remove damaged insulation. We’ll also assist by recommending additional insulation in case your protection is insufficient, and we’ll determine how well your current insulation works for you. Batt and roll insulation is a popular choice for insulation in California, as is blown-in insulation. Batt and roll isn’t as effective in areas that might be hard to reach, so it can be better for crawl spaces. Blown-in insulation is generally more expensive but offers excellent coverage, regardless of the shape of the space. We can install, remove, and inspect both types. You can entrust our insulation removal and replacement team to know what to do with the insulation you need assistance with.

Radiant Barrier Installation

Radiant barriers reflect thermal radiation to help lower heat transfer. Many San Diego homeowners could benefit from the cost savings radiant barrier insulation can have on cooling costs. We can install reflective radiant barriers if you’re ready to start saving. We can also assess your attic or crawl space to see how much it would benefit from a radiant barrier to help you decide either way.

Attic and Crawl Space Cleaning

Even if you don’t need any of the other services we’ve listed, many attics and crawl spaces desperately need a clean-up. It’s not something many homeowners want to tackle themselves, but Attic Projects is happy to do it for you!Our cleaning team will remove debris, sanitize surfaces, and clear out dust and allergens. A cleaner attic or crawl space makes the area less prone to the most common issues, so we highly recommend a professional cleaning if you’ve never had one.

What Impacts the Status of an Attic or Crawl Space?

Now that you better understand our services, how do you know when your attic or crawl space needs professional intervention? Here’s what we typically see happen when we work with our San Diego clients.

  • San Diego’s ClimateSan Diego is big enough for some decent climate variability, especially as you get further away from the ocean. That’s why proper attic ventilation is crucial, and it’s even more critical in the spring and fall when the region’s humidity is at its peak.

San Diego’s temperature average typically sits squarely within the fifties to eighties. And while there’s usually only around 40 or so days of precipitation, humidity can be an issue in the warmer months.

  • How Old Is Your Home?

Older homes are more likely to have problems with their attics and crawl spaces. The median year for most housing units in San Diego is around 1977. That’s over four decades ago, meaning there’s a good chance that your home’s attic or crawl space is dealing with issues or is due for an upgrade.

  • Mold and Moisture

Significant mold infestations are commonplace in San Diego homes thanks to the high humidity levels and proximity to the ocean. And mold is an issue across the country, with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health estimating around 47% of residences have either a mold-like odor or visible mold growth.

  • Rodents in San Diego

Many rodent species are prevalent in San Diego, both in the metro and rural areas. Some of the most common found within Southern California homes include:

    • Roof rats
    • Field mice
    • House mice
    • Ground squirrels
    • Norway rats
    • Gophers

Mice and rats are usually the culprits if you have rodent issues in your attic or crawl space. The rat population in downtown San Diego has been getting worse since 2022, and the city overall ranks as the 26th rattiest city in the country. It’s on the higher end compared to many cities. Hence, it’s important to understand the risks and protect your home from potential infestations.

Roof rats are climbers, so you’re more likely to find them in attics where they’ll make themselves at home. These are the most common type of rat within the county and can carry dangerous diseases and parasites.

Norway rats are less common and usually burrow outside, but they might try to find a way in if there’s inclement weather. They’re equally problematic as other rodents, spreading disease and potentially damaging your home if they enter your attic or crawl space.

  • Requirements for Insulation

Depending on your home’s current insulation, you may need new batting installed to meet building requirements. According to the North American Insulation Manufacturer’s Association (NAIMA), a staggering 90% of homes don’t have enough insulation. The problem can be even worse for California homeowners since many don’t invest in installing enough insulation because of the milder weather.

California’s recommended attic insulation has an R-value between 30 and 60. Most of California falls within Zone 3, with San Diego falling into the category of 3C or “warm marine.” Uninsulated attics in this zone must have an R-value of at least 49. If you already have three or four inches of insulation, the required R-value drops to 38.
