Choosing the Right Attic Insulation Type for Your Seattle Home

  1. Blown-in Cellulose or Fiberglass Fiberglass is best for most WA homes, this is blown into attic spaces, walls and hard to reach areas, fills in cracks and minimizes air leaks.
  2. Batts/Rolls Fibrous materials like fiberglass are installed between joists, rafters and studs, provides insulation and sound dampening. Batts are pre-cut, rolls provide continuous coverage.
  3. Rigid foam boards If you don’t have AC in your Seattle home, these are the go-to for top notch insulation on attic walls and roofs.
  4. Radiant Barrier In Seattle’s mild summers, reflective foil sheets or metalized film under roof rafters helps reduce heat gain, a must have for homes without air conditioning.

Air Conditioning and Insulation

Living in Seattle you notice most homes don’t have AC. That’s where good attic insulation is your best friend to keep your home comfortable year round.

Seattle’s mild summer temperatures average 79°F, so most homes don’t need AC. But well insulated homes can stay cooler during heatwaves.

In winter when temperatures average 37°F most homes rely on heating systems not AC. Efficient insulation is key to keeping homes warm.

Insulation is also important in cities with high humidity like Seattle with 37 inches of rain a year to prevent moisture related issues and a comfortable indoor environment.

Importance of insulated Homes without AC

  • Insulation makes up for the lack of air conditioning by reducing heat gain in summer and retaining warmth in winter.
  • Proper insulation means consistent indoor temperatures which is key in a city with 226 cloudy days a year and big temperature swings.
  • Insulation prevents moisture penetration, a common issue in wet climates, and preserves home structure.

ATTIC STORIES: From Hot to Cool, An Energy Efficiency Makeover

A Seattle homeowner was frustrated with their home that was hot no matter what they did to cool it. We found excessive and improperly installed insulation trapping heat inside, major energy inefficiencies. We removed and replaced the old insulation with the right amount, proper ventilation and airflow throughout the home. This was not only more comfortable for the home but also more energy efficient. By optimizing the insulation and ventilation we protected the HVAC system from damage and cut the client’s energy bills big time.

We offer the following services for attics in Seattle:

FAQ

Not sure if your attic insulation needs an upgrade? At Attic Projects we offer a free inspection. We’ll give you pictures and videos of your attic. Look for signs like high energy bills, uneven temperatures in your home, visible damage (moisture, mold) or insulation over 15 years old. We’ll recommend the best solution based on our findings and your budget.

Yes we can remove the existing blown in insulation. Then we’ll install fiberglass batts or rolls and make sure it fits and covers your attic properly.

Fiberglass insulation is moisture resistant and durable, great for attics in humid areas like Seattle and Tacoma. Cellulose insulation made from recycled materials is eco friendly and has great thermal performance for dry climates.

Attic Projects offers both cellulose insulation, which is made from recyclable materials, as well as spray foam that is non-toxic.  Both of have a reduced carbon footprint as well as are energy savers.

Efficiency: Spray foam insulation expands to fill gaps and cracks, providing excellent air sealing and thermal performance. Blown-in insulation can cover a large area more uniformly but it doesn’t seal gaps as tightly as foam spray does.

Application: Spray foam is ideal for new construction attics or for major renovations.

Blown-in insulation is good for retrofitting existing buildings without much disruption.
