Types of Attic Insulation in Orange County

Blown In or Loose Blown-In or Loose Fill

Blown-in fiberglass is the go-to method for attic insulation installation Orange County homeowners request when dealing with tight spaces, irregular framing, or areas around ductwork and wiring that batt insulation can’t fully cover. The loose-fill material fills every gap and void without manual cutting or fitting. Attic Projects also installs rolled fiberglass batts for standard open-joist attic floors where consistent R-value coverage and clean sight lines matter. Most Orange County attic insulation jobs are completed in approximately 3-5 hours ( depending on attic size) through the existing attic hatch with zero drywall removal.

Fiberglass batts and rolls are fitted between joists, rafters, and studs to insulate and reduce noise transfer. Batts are pre-cut to fit standard Orange County home framing, while rolls cover continuous runs. This is the most budget-friendly attic insulation option for Orange County homeowners upgrading from outdated or compressed insulation.

Reflective foil sheets installed under roof rafters bounce radiant heat outward, dropping attic temperatures by up to 30 degrees during Orange County summers. Homes with south-facing roofs see the biggest gains. Attic Projects installs radiant barriers as a standalone upgrade or paired with blown-in insulation for maximum energy savings in Orange County’s warm climate.

Rigid foam panels and closed-cell spray foam deliver the highest R-value per inch of any attic insulation type. Attic Projects installs foam board on attic walls and roof decks for airtight, consistent coverage. Spray foam is ideal for older Orange County homes with irregular framing, sealing gaps and cracks that batts and blown-in insulation miss.

California Title 24 requires R-30 minimum attic floor insulation for most Orange County homes in Climate Zone 8, with R-38 recommended for new construction and high-performance attic assemblies. The mandatory minimum is R-22 for wood-framed ceilings, but most Orange County attic insulation projects target R-30 to R-38 for meaningful energy savings. Homes built before the 2008 code update typically have R-19 or less, which allows significant heat transfer during Orange County summers. Upgrading from R-19 to R-38 reduces ceiling heat gain by up to 25%.

Title 24 also requires radiant barriers in Climate Zone 8 for new construction. Standard fiberglass and cellulose insulation slows conductive heat, but Orange County roofs reach 150 degrees or higher in direct sun, radiating heat downward into the attic. A radiant barrier reflects up to 97% of that radiant heat back toward the roof deck. Attic Projects pairs radiant barriers with blown-in or batt insulation to keep the full attic space cooler, which also protects HVAC ductwork running through the attic at the required R-8 insulation rating.

Note: Most of Orange County falls in Climate Zone 8, but coastal cities like Newport Beach are Climate Zone 6 and some inland areas fall into Zone 9. Each zone has different R-value requirements. Attic Projects verifies your exact climate zone and current R-value during our free inspection to recommend the right insulation type and thickness for your specific address.

Orange County homeowners who upgrade from R-19 to R-38 attic insulation typically reduce heating and cooling costs by 15-20%. With SCE rates at 30 cents per kilowatt-hour, mid-sized homes regularly see summer electric bills of $200 to $350. A typical 1,500 sq ft project costs $2,500 to $5,000 depending on scope, with most upgrades paying for themselves within 5 to 10 years. Pairing insulation with professional air sealing pushes savings closer to 25% by closing gaps around light fixtures, pipes, and electrical penetrations that let conditioned air escape into the attic.

Factors to Consider When Selecting Attic Insulation Services

  • R-value rating – Higher is better. We recommend R-30 or higher for Orange County attics to account for our climate.
  • Fitting tight spaces like sloped rafters and around ductwork/wiring
  • Sealing air gaps around fixtures, pipes, and walls to maximize efficiency
  • Withstands regional temperature/humidity fluctuations without degrading
  • Promotes healthy indoor air by blocking dust, pollen, and pollutants
  • Professional installation for optimal insulation density, coverage, and performance

Why Attic Insulation Matters in Orange County’s Climate

With SCE rates averaging 30 cents per kilowatt-hour (EnergySage, 2026), Orange County homeowners face some of the highest cooling costs in the country. Properly installed attic insulation reduces cooling load by 20-40%, depending on the starting condition. Many Orange County customers see their investment pay for itself within 18-24 months through lower Southern California Edison bills alone. Additionally, local utility rebates through SCE’s Home Energy Efficiency Rebate program can offset 10-15% of installation costs.

Beyond energy savings, proper attic insulation prevents moisture problems that lead to mold growth, protects HVAC ductwork from extreme attic temperatures, and improves indoor air quality by reducing the thermal stack effect that pulls contaminated attic air into your living space. If your existing insulation is damaged, compressed, or contaminated by rodent activity, Attic Projects coordinates insulation removal and attic sanitation before installing new material.

Historic Homes Lack Modern Insulation Standards

According to the Orange County Assessor office, 36% of all OC homes were built before 1975; several decades old, they may not have modern insulation standards and are energy inefficient. With rising electricity rates, insufficient insulation can cause your energy bills to go through the roof.

Wildfires and Pollution

Proper attic insulation creates a barrier from outdoor pollution, allergens, and wildfire smoke, potentially entering the home’s air space through the attic. Properly insulating your Orange County attic is one of the most impactful steps a homeowner can take to enhance comfort, efficiency, and indoor air quality. WORDS FROM OUR FANS

Can’t beat the 10 year warranty. Vince Lee, the Project Manager, was the first person I worked with from the company. He guided me through all of the prospective steps. He made me feel at ease with the procedure and also made suggestions of what I could do around my house to prevent rodents from getting into my attic. He gave me the assurance that he would help with any questions that I had about what was going on with the project. He is very amiable. I appreciate that. The entire crew is courteous, patient and knowledgeable. They took care to protect my home while removing and installing insulation.

The Attic Projects team did an attic clean up, rodent proofing, air sealing (to house) and insulation in 2022. They have a 10 year warranty vs rodents. In 2025 After hearing rat activity in the attic I went up and saw evidence of rat burrows and many droppings. Their team came out without within a few days, confirmed the recurrence, sealed up a few potential points of entry and set more traps. After continuing the catch multiple rats over extended period of time it was determined the best course of action was to remove the blown in insulation and search for all points of entry and seal those up. While no company wants to redo a job they handled it very professionally. Simply, Its covered under our warranty and we will take care of it. They sent out a team removed all insulation, came back multiple times over a few weeks sealing up potential points of entry. After no more rats were caught for 2 weeks we schedule the insulation installation. The team arrived exactly at 8am, took measures to minimize contamination to the house (i.e plastic barriers), very professional and thorough. They did not solicit this review. I highly recommend this team. Peace of mind that they guarantee their work and you are dealing with professionals. I have recommended them to my neighbors and others.

Ricky Palacios from Attic Projects was super thorough in his holistic approach to improving my house’s energy efficiency. We have both cold floors and 20 year old insulation in the attic. He checked the attic, crawlspace, and vaulted ceilings to give me the best possible solutions on reducing my HVAC usage and having a better feeling home. He explained the solutions step by step in a way where I was able to learn a lot in the process. I highly recommend their team for your insulation needs!

Attic Projects recently completed comprehensive (1) attic cleaning (2) disinfecting (3) rodent prevention foaming and wiring throughout structure premises, and (4) insulation installation in our 2 attic, split level home. From the initial quote inspection through to completion, their customer service and professionalism, service delivery care, quality control measures, teamwork, payment process, and client communication with their project lead and administrative staff was seamless and attentive. I give a shout out of thanks and gratitude to each member of their team for providing Attic Projects excellence. Our warranty is also fabulous. I highly recommend Attic Projects; my profession is in public health, and their workers also wore important protective gear and cared about one another’s safety throughout the work. The price was in our budget, and seems reflective of their equipment, materials, labor, safety, and project implementation costs. I’m overjoyed to have worked with them.
